WHITE ARROWS

“Louche and strung-out track from the LA band” Hottest Download Sunday Times Culture
“An impressive collection of songs that hint at their potential” Music Week
Following the release of their debut ep earlier this summer Los Angeles’ five-piece White Arrows are set to make their British live debut and release their first single, ‘Get Gone’. It is a groove-soaked, synth’-laden slice of what’s to come, on the band’s RAC produced debut album, scheduled for release in 2012.
A fusion of heavyweight melodic hooks, hip hop drum samples and analogue synths - the White Arrows sound is a potent brew cooked up by singer Mickey Church, Steven Vernet (bass) Andrew Naeve (electronics), Mickey’s younger brother Henry Church (drums) and half-brother, John Paul Caballero (guitar).
Church the elder is no stranger to the odd herbal infusion, born blind Mickey Church spent his first years railing against his fate and through an extensive program of eye excercises and superhuman determination regained his vision at the age of eleven. This transformation led to a degree at NYU in Ritualistic Shamanism. Church’s obsession with the alternative drew him to the booming NYC club scene : the cultural and philosophical blend was the prime ingredient in the formation of White Arrows.
Church returned to his native LA and there together with the newly formed band, White Arrows have spent the intervening time perfecting their art. A heavy weight touring schedule around the States has meant the band have performed with Cults, White Denim, The Airborne Toxic Event, and Portugal the Man among others
Their British live debut was late September and saw the band more gig-fit than ever. It is bracketed by a mammoth Stateside touring schedule that sawshows with Those Darlins and Weezer during August and then on the return from the UK, a 16 date run with Naked and Famous throughout October, followed by a west coast headline run in December.

THE VELVET TEEN

Since its inception in late 1999, The Velvet Teen has traveled the world and challenged the very concept of genre with its eclectic and at times schizophrenic appeal. From the early EPs which showed prowess in the pop realm, to the dynamic indie jangle of 'Out of the Fierce Parade', to the romantic strings and quietly political lyrics of 'Elysium', to the sexually charged whip-it beats of 'Cum Laude', The Velvet Teen truly has a talent for seducing the masses into a cult-like state, before promptly leaving the faithless with nothing but a kool-aid aftertaste. The believers, however, will vouch that the experience is well worth the trouble.
The Velvet Teen officially made its debut in a brief Icelandic tour in the debatedly millennial new year, finding founding member Judah Nagler accompanied by electronic arrangements programmed on a portable sequencer. After returning home, Nagler teamed up with former bandmate Logan Whitehurst, and together they recorded the first EP under the moniker. Joshua Staples soon joined the group, and the trio recorded a wealth of material while touring North America, Canada and Japan until late 2004, when Logan was diagnosed with brain cancer. He died from the disease in 2006. Casey Deitz filled in during Logan's absence and later joined the group to help extend the band's reach to Europe and record Cum Laude.
The present day finds The Velvet Teen writing and recording as always, the newest material a culmination of its history, its vision set on the horizon. You are cordially invited to take part in the madness.

SAID THE WHALE

Said The Whale formed in 2007 as a collaboration between songwriters Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft. The pair's debut EP, Taking Abalonia, featured sunny west coast indie pop, with breezy harmonies, shimmering guitars, and lyrical tributes to their home city of Vancouver. In 2008, the album was rereleased as Howe Sounds/Talking Abalonia, featuring seven additional tracks that stretched the band's stylistic palate to include bubblegum folk ("The Light Is You"), thundering hard rock ("Last Tree Standing") and gentle ukulele ballads ("The Real of It"). After several personnel changes, the group settled upon a five-piece lineup that includes bassist Nathan Shaw, drummer Spencer Schoening, and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown. The quintet embarked upon a rigorous touring schedule, crossing Canada numerous times and landing high profile gigs at V-Fest 2008 in Calgary and the nationally televised Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill.
DELTA RAE

From a quiet, country house nestled deep within the Durham, North Carolina woods, Delta Rae fuses its inspired 4-part harmonies with a deep Carolina soul. They are Mumford & Sons meets Fleetwood Mac -- a full-throated Alt-Pop band with four lead singers -- delivering crushing harmonies and an electrifying live experience.
In just under two years, Delta Rae has produced a diverse catalogue of original songs, an independently released EP, and a dynamic live show that has attracted widespread attention from fans and artists alike. Having headlined shows to sold-out crowds on both coasts and opened for popular artists like Carbon Leaf, Edwin McCain, Hanson, Rooney, and Vienna Teng, Delta Rae is establishing itself as one of the most impressive young bands on the club circuit.
Edwin McCain: "It's hard to deny when the real thing shows up. And they're the real thing… I promise you you're gonna be like 'hey I was on a boat with them' when you're watching them on TV…They're fantastic." -Edwin McCain (Cayamo Cruise 2010)
Alanis Morissette, after discovering that Delta Rae covered a version of her song "Your House," wrote on facebook and twitter that she was "Honored by [Delta Rae's] beautiful version"
Hanson: "Wow. I think we should be opening for them. That was really really really impressive." - Isaac Hanson of Hanson (Livestream interview from The Orange Peel in Asheville,NC)

AU

AU (pronounced "ay-you") is the work of multi-instrumentalist/singer Luke Wyland. Begun in 2005 while finishing up his degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, then moved Portland, OR. Currently a full time duo with Dana Valatka on drums, it can be a loosely defined amalgam of players that can swell to double digit numbers with full choir in tow and sees some of Portland's finest lending a helping hand. It's sound is vast and "deftly treads a narrow bridge between the loose-associations of the backwoods freak-folk crowd and the more formalized concoctions of art-poppers like Brian Eno."Since the release of it's critically acclaimed debut album in 2007, it has become a road worn live act who have been touring incessantly for the last few years throughout the US and Europe with great bands including most recently Deerhoof, the Dodos, and WHY?.
They've released two LP's (Au and Verbs) including an earlier solo album under the moniker 'luc' entitled peaofthesea (Aagoo 2005). AU's latest EP, Versions, was released as a limited edition of 500 on 10" vinyl in October of 2009 on Aagoo Records. Recorded in Vermont and New Hampshire through the winter of 2008-9, it stands as a document of the duo's distinctive ability to reinterpret songs from their recorded form and the heightened energy of their live show. With Dana's virtuosic drumming spawned from a youth playing in heavy metal bands, Luke's ability to multitask on numerous instruments at once, and their "special one-on-one musical, almost telepathic connection," it is a snap shot into their sprawling sets that find them deftly navigating between bombastic walls of sound, lilting lyrical numbers, and carnivalesque organ celebrations.

BETHPAGE BLACK

You might think of Long Beach, CA, from whence 4-piece rock band Bethpage Black came, as a haven for hip-hop, reggae-funk jam bands or quirky, jangly indie-folk-rock-electro-whatever-pop. But Bethpage Black are forging a musical path that’s decidedly different from the Snoop Doggs, Sublimes and Avi Buffaloes of the region.
“We call it ‘Sickle Pop,’” explains drummer/songwriter Steve Coy. “It’s aggressive pop-rock with a slightly rusty metal edge.”
The songs on the band’s new EP, titled Black Music, reflect this sensibility–and a variety of influences from Muse and The Used to Brahms and Bizet. The band’s quintessentially 21st-century roster is as diverse as the music they make. Coy and guitarist Davin Givhan (Saul Williams, Lauryn Hill) met in high school, reconnecting years later via a chance meeting and a shared love of Pantera. They later met singer Matt Carmichael fronting a wildly popular 80′s cover band. Bassist Vivien Larena rounds out the all-world lineup, having come into the fold via the internet’s go-to musical marketplace, Craigslist.
From Carmichael’s powerhouse vocals and Givhan’s prodigious guitar shredding talents to Larena’s tasteful bass lines and Coy’s precise, aggressive drumming, it’s the band’s talent sets Bethpage Black apart. Co-produced and mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Neon Trees), Black Music proves that, in the words of Carmichael, “this band can play anything it wants to.”
